i don’t want this to be over yet

Matthew

Kathy and I eat breakfast together, and then chat all morning, and then grab lunch together, and then I don’t want to let her go, but she has a flight to catch, and I have to accept that.

I offer to drive her to the airport, and she lets me. It is difficult for me to see her get out of my car. I don’t want to say goodbye. I want to say, “I think we’re supposed to be together, and you should come to Chicago every weekend, and I’m already in love with you, so just stay, okay?”

What I actually say is, “Text me when you get home. Or call. If you want.”

“The next time you see me, I’ll probably look pregnant,” she says.

“You’ll still be beautiful,” I tell her, and then she disappears into the airport with her zebra-striped carry-on. At least it’s about ten pounds lighter than it was when she brought it here since I convinced her to let me mail her shoes home to her. She’s pregnant. She shouldn’t be lifting twenty-pound carry-on bags over her head.

So that’s the end of our affair, and all at once I am a one-man band again. Kathy and I have known each other for less than twenty-four hours, and I feel like I know this woman better than I’ve ever known any woman. As I drive home, I feel more alone than I’ve felt in a long time.

I’m at sixes and sevens at home. I think about going to the gym, but I don’t really want to. I think about sitting down and streaming a movie or a show, but I don’t want to do that, either. There are several books I’m supposed to be finishing, but none of them sound interesting.

In the end, I do something I hardly ever do when I’m alone on a Sunday: I pull out my computer and get some work done for a client. Splitz. They’re the tenth fastest-growing company in the United States right now. Their projections have them quadrupling in size next year. They’re adding offices all over the place, and right now they’re headquartered in Atlanta, but they’re talking about relocating to California. Before they can do that, though, they need to deal with a big merger that completely messed with their vibe.

Angela actually went down to Atlanta over the summer to try to help them out with their company culture issues, but they basically hated her. Splitz is probably the one and only company Ang will ever work with that doesn’t like her, but she was too structured for them. They were going to fire Vain because they disliked her so much, then I found the file, made a few phone calls, and voila! We’re back in business. At the end of the day, Splitz only needed a consultant who could understand their open-minded, flexible culture, and I do.

I spend the rest of Sunday afternoon creating a presentation for them about a new idea I have.
